Comparative Medicine has the operational responsibility for the infrastructure supporting all aspects of use and care of laboratory animals. We provide Laboratory Animal Science education and training (LAS E&T) as well as continuous professional development (CPD). We endeavor to incorporate the 3R principle (Reduce, Refine, Replace) in every aspect of Karolinska Institutet's use of experimental animals.

Comparative Medicine is responsible for the future development of this infrastructure incorporating a total of four animal facilities and we are now recruiting a facility manager for one of these facilities, the Astrid Fagraeus Laboratory.

Work description
The Astrid Fagraeus Laboratory is AAALAC accredited and house a range of species including small rodents, larger species and non-human primates. It is equipped with resources enabling work at BSL-2 and BSL-3. It opened in 2003 and is currently subject for refurbishment.

The successful applicant will be responsible for the management and organization as well as the future development of the animal facility to meet the demands of the research community at KI. The position comes with an overall responsibility for the hired staff including their continuous professional development. The manager will also bear the responsibility that the directives, including hygienic and barrier concepts of the Comparative Medicine is complied with. The manager will supervise, coordinate and manage husbandry operations for the laboratory animal care and ensure that the standard operating procedures are compliant with the Swedish legislation and the directives of Comparative Medicine. In addition, the manager is responsible for keeping track of the expenses and revenues and for planning new investments together with the executive staff of Comparative Medicine.

As manager you are responsible for an efficient interaction with the Tech and Support Unit of Comparative Medicine, which are responsible for maintenance programs, services of tech equipment, and logistics between facilities. At your assistance you will have a management team which includes the designated veterinarian and superintendent. You are also member of the executive board of facilities/units chaired by the Director of Comparative medicine; this is the forum where activities of facilities /units are coordinated.

The executive staff and office of Comparative Medicine will provide the facility and its manager with the financial framework of facility operations, advice as needed on issues related to veterinary medicine (Chief veterinarian), the 3Rs (3R office), Education and training, and CPD records (Education office), technical matters including IT issues (Infrastructure unit), and more.

You should be available for this position no later than January 2017.
